MTV’s Teen Wolf
Season 5B
The Ask: Teen Wolf was always a joy to work on. Pure pulp perfection, gonzo as all get out, and yet still smarter than it had any right to be. For the uninitiated, season 5A concerned “The Dread Doctors", who were sadly not a classic Jamaican sound system crew, but 3 extra-dimensional mad scientists who turned out to be super old French guys, on a centuries-long mission to bring one of their werewolf boyfriends back to life by like… mindmelding him into one of the only teenagers in this bucolic town that wasn’t already a monster person? They also had an evil teen-wolf henchmen named Theo who ends up seeing the light. I digress. At the end of 5A, the gang finds a fresco that I guess the extra-dimensional industrial French guys painted, depicting the obliteration of said bucolic town…
we found our key art.
Role: Art directior, writer, director
Initially, we had planned to base the campaign around the actual painting from the set of the show, but production stills unfortunately confirmed that it wouldn’t be suitable for the promotion, we’d have to create our own. We turned to Gericault’s brutal masterpiece The Raft of the Medusa for inspiration, planning to create an epic piece of art showing just how bad things in little old Beacon Hills might become. We convinced the show runner to give us teases for each of the main characters’ arcs, so that the death and destruction they’re facing in the painting actually relates to events yet-to-happen in the show. We also seeded it heavily with Easter eggs from past seasons, as well as a few other teases of things to come. The fandom caught on, and social stunts around close ups and crops of the art were major successes in engagement and hype.
Grisly…
The shadows of the monsters were in fact filmed practically at an actual crypt in Harlem, where we also plated several alternates for the hero promo.
The Outcome:
• Teen Wolf Season 5B debuted to it’s highest ratings up to that point in the show’s history, with comparable numbers in social engagement.
• The campaign was the subject of a ProMax feature, and remains a popular and memorable moment among the show’s still very active fandom.
Prior to Season 6, Teen Wolf Season 5B debuted to the highest ratings yet recorded for the show.
We also created an updated logo mark for the season, stylizing the type to evoke a crumbling fresco.
