Yahoo News
Interactive Climate Map
The Ask: In late 2022, the Yahoo News Visuals team was approached by a sr. news editor covering the ongoing climate crisis. He’d written a series of stories breaking the U.S. into 7 regions, and then detailing projections for climate change around each one, over the next 50 years. We were approached about creating something more unique and elevated than the current article hub, which was essentially a banner ad with some links below it. With our art department only a few months old, it was a fantastic opportunity to show what we were capable of across multiple channels and disciplines, combining UI/UX savvy with evocative animations, and rich data visualization to round out the story, driving home just how extreme and imminent a threat the crisis presents. Though company-wide product limitations did curtail some of our more ambitious plans, the team delivered not just typically top-notch creative, but some innovative product work arounds as well.
Role: Creative direction, design
Outcomes:
• On publication, the microsite generated its own headlines within the industry, and served as a major win for the YNews brand and the visuals team within the company
• The project won 2nd place for Site Design and 3rd Place for Multimedia Package at the 2023 Southern California Journalism Awards, furthering positive buzz and visibility for this new era of Yahoo News.
• This glowing reception led to greater cross-channel involvement for the team with partners in product and engineering, ultimately resulting in new widgets for enhanced visuals and interactivity being included in article template and homepage redesign efforts.
The climate map was just one of two interactive microsites taken on simultaneously by the team just a few months after their formation. Both received awards recognition. Check out the climate map here.
The map analyzed and projected the effects of the climate crisis from a broad, fascinating, and ultimately very troubling array of perspectives and stats.
